Coffins vs. Caskets

While the terms “coffin” and “casket” are often used interchangeably, they actually refer to two distinct types of burial or cremation receptacles, each with its own characteristics:

Coffin:

Shape:

Coffins are typically tapered at the head and foot and wider at the shoulders, resembling the shape of the human body. They have six or eight sides, with the sides narrowing towards the feet.

Construction:

Historically, coffins were often made of wood and crafted by hand. Traditional coffins may still be made of wood, although modern options may also include alternative materials such as plantation pine, cardboard or eco-friendly materials.

Casket:

Shape:

Caskets have a rectangular shape with four sides and a lid that opens horizontally. They are typically uniform in width and depth, providing a more standardized appearance.

Construction:

Caskets are usually constructed of solid timber or metal, such as steel or aluminium, They are often manufactured using mass production techniques, resulting in a consistent and uniform product.

Design:

Caskets come in a variety of styles, finishes, and interior linings to suit individual preferences and budgetary considerations. They may feature decorative elements such as handles, trim, and embellishments.
